The History Of The Sorcerer's Apprentice

Our Story

Nestled in the heart of Burley village next to the historic Queen's Head pub, The Sorcerer's Apprentice stands on the site of the original village blacksmith's forge, dating back to around 1685.

This building was once part of the forge complex, where the large brick hearth – still proudly preserved inside our shop – heated iron for shoeing horses and crafting metalwork. As the forge gave way to the pub, our space became the Queen's Head gift shop before evolving into the independent Sorcerer's Apprentice, embracing the magic of Burley's heritage with our range of gifts for all tastes.

Today, step inside to see the ancient forge oven (often adorned with a witch's broom!) alongside our enchanting collection – a unique blend of New Forest history and magic.

Life in Burley & the New Forest

Over the years, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice has become a much-loved independent shop in Burley, welcoming locals, day-trippers, and visitors exploring the New Forest. Nestled within this historic village, the store is surrounded by ancient woodland, open heathland, and the famous free-roaming New Forest ponies, cows, and pigs that wander freely through the area — often right past our door.
